A short history of GW7X

This is a short page, since Contest Cambria is just a few years old!

The group was originally created as Contest Cymru, but because of a name conflict, the alternative Contest Cambria was chosen.

Several members of Contest Cambria were founders of the Cardiff Radio Contest Club in the late 1960s. With the callsign GW3XEJ, the club last entered a major contest in 1969. The club achieved a score of about 853000 points in the CQWW CW contest as a Multi Single.

If you remember GW3XEJ, you really are an OT!

In the late 1970s several more members came together to operate as a Multi Single in the CQWW phone contest. The callsign was GW6GW, from the Blackwood Club QTH.

The co-operative spirit was so successful that the Red Dragon Contest Group was formed. The group was issued GW8GT, the callsign of a SK member of the Newport Club.

GW8GT had its own site with multiple towers, and operating cabins which were well suited to many types of operation in the major contests. The callsign GW8GT was well-known in contest circles for many years.

The members of GW8GT were geographically scattered, and there was difficulty in maintaining a remote site, so the group stopped entering major contests in 2000.

There was a feeling that some joint contest activity should still take place. Thus it was that Contest Cambria was formed in early 2001, and the callsign GW3XEJ was re-issued to the group.

The club has also been issued with the callsign GW7X, to be used in major international contests. The callsign was first aired in the 2001 CQ WPX SSB contest. GW7X has been heard many times since, as well as the variants GM7X and GU7X.
